BIRTHDAY

(By the way, the date says the 28th...but it was totally after midnight, making it the 29th...BOOYAH)

Yeah, I know it's been well over a month since I've posted a song. BIRTHDAY. GET OVER IT.

So, in honor of my birthday, the song of the day is:

"Money"
by Pink Floyd

"Money, get away.
Get a good job with good pay and youre okay.
Money, its a gas.
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team.
Money, get back.
I'm all right jack keep your hands off of my stack.
Money, its a hit.
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit.
I'm in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a lear jet.
Money, its a crime.
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie.
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today.
But if you ask for a raise its no surprise that theyre
Giving none away.
Huhuh! I was in the right!
Yes, absolutely in the right!
I certainly was in the right!
You was definitely in the right.
That geezer was cruising for a bruising!
Yeah!
Why does anyone do anything?
I don't know, I was really drunk at the time!
I was just telling him, he couldn't get into number 2. He was asking
Why he wasn't coming up on freely, after I was yelling and
Screaming and telling him why he wasn't coming up on freely.
It came as a heavy blow, but we sorted the matter out"

Now, one might ask "Why on Earth 'Money' because it's your birthday?"...First of all...

BIRTHDAY! *PWNED!*

Second off, this song was playing while I was born. Yes at the very moment in the room as I was being born, WTAK in Huntsville, Alabama was playing "Money" by Pink Floyd. Therefore, I listen to it every year on my birthday. I mean...seriously...The first thing I heard coming into the world besides the general people and noises in the room was a Pink Floyd song. And people wonder why I love classic rock so much!

And finally, how could I not post "Money" on Song of the Day at some point? Might as well put it on the day that I first heard it. Of course I love the lyrics, especially "share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie." But what I really love about this song is the bridge, where amazing guitar parts are paralleled with a fantastic sax solo. I feel that this song is a stroke of genius by Waters with help from Gilmour. Some of the double track techniques they used in creating this song was very impressive as well.

Sadly, even though it is BIRTHDAY, I do have class at 8 am tomorrow...So I have to be up and moving in about 6 hours. I have noticed my typing abilities going down the drain. For example, "typing" in that last sentence was almost "typo." That's my brains way of saying, "GET SOME SLEEP YOU FOO'!"

So I shall...and P.S.

BIRTHDAY!

Day 12 "Being Alive"

Ok, so yesterday didn't happen, so I'm just going to pretend that it didn't exist. On to today!

Today is a rather special day for people like me and my roommate. It's the day that actors are awarded for being someone else on stage. That's right...It's the day of the Tony Awards.

So in honor of the famed award, the song today is from the musical Company, in the high hopes that the person who sang this song most recently on Broadway wins a Tony this year...and the anti-Esparza does not...

"Being Alive"
from Company (Stephen Sondheim)

"ROBERT [speaking]: Stop!...What do you get? [Sings]
Someone to hold you too close,
Someone to hurt you too deep,
Someone to sit in your chair,
To ruin your sleep.

PAUL: That's true, but there's more to it than that.
SARAH: Is that all you think there is to it?
HARRY: You've got so many reasons for not being with someone, but
Robert, you haven't got one good reason for being alone.
LARRY: Come on, you're on to something, Bobby. You're on to something.

ROBERT:
Someone to need you too much,
Someone to know you too well,
Someone to pull you up short
And put you through hell.

DAVID: You see what you look for, you know.
JOANNE: You're not a kid anymore, Robby. I don't think you'll ever
be a kid again, kiddo.
PETER: Hey, buddy, don't be afraid it won't be perfect. The only thing
to be afraid of really is that it won't be.
JENNY: Don't stop now. Keep going.

ROBERT:
Someone you have to let in,
Someone whose feelings you spare,
Someone who, like it or not,
Will want you to share
A little, a lot.

SUSAN: And what does all that mean?
LARRY: Robert, how do you know so much about it when you've never
been there?
HARRY: It's much better living it than looking at it, Robert.
PETER: Add 'em up, Bobby. Add 'em up.

ROBERT:
Someone to crowd you with love,
Someone to force you to care,
Someone to make you come through,
Who'll always be there,
As frightened as you
Of being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive.

AMY: Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. *Want* something!
Want *something*!

ROBERT:
Somebody, hold me too close,
Somebody, hurt me too deep,
Somebody, sit in my chair
And ruin my sleep
And make me aware
Of being alive,
Being alive.
Somebody, need me too much,
Somebody, know me too well,
Somebody, pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support
For being alive,
Make me alive.
Make me confused,
Mock me with praise,
Let me be used,
Vary my days.
But alone is alone, not alive.
Somebody, crowd me with love,
Somebody, force me to care,
Somebody, make me come through,
I'll always be there,
As frightened as you,
To help us survive
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive!"

This has to be one of my favorite musical songs, and one of the best parts of it is how Raul Esparza sings it. He's just fantastic! Not to mention that everyone in the cast was playing an instrument throughout the entire show.

Now, I would not say that Company is my favorite show, that would probably go to Les Miserables. I just can't get past the repetitive (Bobby, Bobby, Bobby baby...etc.) as you get to preview in the clip I put up. But, if you can get past that, the actual plot, message, and story line are VERY good. My roommate performed in this musical with the Starkville Community Theater and did a fantastic job with it. I think I learned more about the musical than I ever needed to know, and had most of the songs memorized just from hearing it in her car, but I still can say I like the musical. I would say this could definitely be considered a Sondheim masterpiece.

Day 11 "Kashmir"

For today.

"Kashmir"
by Led Zeppelin

"Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed
Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Oh, oh.
Oh, I been flying... mama, there ain't no denyin'
I've been flying, ain't no denyin', no denyin'
All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I've been.
Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My shangri-la beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high and true, when movin through Kashmir.
Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails, across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face, along the straits of fear
Ohh.
When I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down...
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, well I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oooh, my baby, let me take you there"

This is a really incredible song. Even if you take out the lyrics, the main guitar riff is enough to make this song amazing. I've been a fan of Led Zeppelin for a long time, and over the past year, I've gotten to know some of their music better. One of the many great qualities of their music that stands out to me are the lyrics. From what I've heard, Robert Plant was a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings series and has written songs about it...such as "The Battle of Evermore" - "The ringwraiths ride in black," "Rambling' on" -"Cause in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair. But Golem and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her," and I noticed in this song - "To speak with elders of the gentle race, the world has seldom seen." Granted, it is a bit of a stretch on the last one, but I always picture elves during that part of the song.

Day 9 "And Your Bird Can Sing"

Well, originally I was going to post a song that had something to do with temperature...since our AC decided to die yesterday...But then a little bird decided to chirp really loud next to our door, so I thought I'd do a tribute to it.

Today's song:

"And Your Bird Can Sing"
by The Beatles

"You tell me that you've got everything you want
And your bird can sing
But you don't get me, you don't get me
You say you've seen seven wonders and your bird is green
But you can't see me, you can't see me
When your prized possessions start to weigh you down
Look in my direction, I'll be round, I'll be round
When your bird is broken will it bring you down
You may be awoken, I'll be round, I'll be round
You tell me that you've heard every sound there is
And your bird can swing
But you can't hear me, you can't hear me"

This is definitely one of my favorite Beatles songs...not my absolute favorite, but one of my favorites. It's from the album Revolver which is also one of my favorite albums. The reason why I love this song is just the way the song sounds...and the lyrics. They're kind of fun. As with most Beatles' songs, George's guitar parts are perfect in the sense that they're powerful enough to make a point, yet not too over powering where John's voice is less intensified.

I'm not doing this song near enough justice on here, but it's almost impossible to do any Beatles' song justice in any way. I will say that this song is proof that sure, all the #1 hits of the Beatles were great, but there's so much more on their albums that are even better in some ways.

Day 8 "Once in a Lifetime"

Thanks for taking over for me yesterday, Anna! I really appreciate it!

I can't believe it's been a whole week since I've started this, and today starts my first summer class and my job. Should be fun...

But for today's song...

"Once in a Lifetime"
by The Talking Heads

(A small sample)

(and a live version)

"And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself-well...how did I get here?
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the moneys gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.
And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the moneys gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the moneys gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.
And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? ...am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
My god!...what have I done?
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the moneys gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was..."

I'm having trouble finding the music video. It's pretty out there and I wish everyone could see it. Vh1 classic is letting me down by not letting me watch any videos at all...so I'll just go with my discussion.

The song is out there, no debating that. But it's just so much fun and it's one of those songs that I love to play when I'm bored out of my mind or driving to or from Huntsville / school. It has been quoted in everything from The Drew Carey show to Muppets Tonight, with Kermit singing and the critics saying "same as it ever was." Go figure...I can find it...

The Talking Heads deserve a place on this list, not necessarily because they're the best musicians, but mostly because they did something different...I know a lot of people think all 80's music sounds the same, but I honestly don't feel that is the case. I feel that the 80's was a time where there was an explosion of color and fun music that wanted to be different than the norm...which I feel that David Byrne succeeded in, even with his crazy, funky dance.

Here's something extra, just for fun... See how many you know...

And another...with the song of the day...and Freddie Mercury in drag...

Day 7 "Coming Back to Life"

For today:

"Coming Back to Life"
by Pink Floyd

"Where were you when I was burned and broken
While the days slipped by from my window watching
Where were you when I was hurt and I was helpless
Because the things you say and the things you do surround me
While you were hanging yourself on someone elses words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun
Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of live and the seeds of change were planted
Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistable pastime
I took a heavenly ride through one silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life
I took a heavenly ride trough our silence
I knew the waiting had begin
And headed straight... into the shining sun"

For today, I thought that I would pick an easy-going song. You can rest assured more Pink Floyd songs will be on this list. One thing I love the most about Pink Floyd is their diversity. You can listen to their earlier music, featuring Syd Barrett, that is out there and extremely trippy. Then there are the Rodger Waters years...Darkside of the Moon and The Wall for example...paying homage to their mental ex-bandmate. Then when Waters left the band, Gilmour stepped up and took over. To be honest, I kind of favor the Gilmour albums more than the others. To me, it seemed like the music ment more. Waters had a way of pouring himself into music as well, but listeners are usually too weirded out to really get into the music...or too stoned.

Gilmour knew how to play a guitar riff that expressed his soul during a song. He also was very imaginitive in his lyrics, using vocabulary in some songs that you don't hear that often on a rock album. When you listen to Division Bell or Momentary Lapse of Reason (which is where my username came from), you're listening to poetry with beautiful music accompaning it.

I have to add, out of sheer boasting, that the heads shown on the video (which the picture is of the album cover) are at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...and I have seen them.

Since I'm going to be out of town for orientation for work, I'm going to have a guest "blogger" for tomorrow. My roommate will be posting a blog on her's, "Under the Sofa" and you can reach it through her profile button up top...where she is listed as my only follower. :) Thanks Anna!
